October Newsletter

Dear Parents,

October is a calmer month now that the children have settled into the program and have become comfortable being here. This will just keep getting better and better.

Thanks to all for attending our “Meet the Teacher and Staff” night. We hope all of your questions were answered and you were able to meet some of the other families in the program. You children will start asking for play dates with their friends very soon.

The attached calendar will outline this month’s lessons and activities. We will be concentrating on the Fall season, Fire Prevention Week, begin shapes and colors, five senses and of course Halloween. This month also includes some science and language activities. As always, crafts, stories, songs and games are a daily part of our program. Please take the time to stop, look, listen and question your child about the special crafts and projects that he/she makes. Your participation in this way is a very important part of the whole learning experience.

We will begin giving homework to all kindergarten bound children this month so if you have not brought in a hard covered marble notebook as of yet, please do so ASAP. Don’t forget to label the notebook with your child’s name. This applies to kindergarten bound children only. The homework will reinforce the lesson of the day and later on in the year will include pre-handwriting skills. Please encourage your child to color all activity sheets and to complete all homework assignments but do not force them to do so.

This month is an especially busy month because of our Halloween crafts – black cats, spiders, bats, masks, jolly jack-o-lanterns and trick or treat bags. We are also planning a Halloween Costume Party. Our party will be held on Thursday, October 31st for all children enrolled in our school. A note with all the details will be sent home at a later date.

Please keep in mind that every child enrolled in our program must have an up to date medical on file. If you have not returned to us a completed medical form with an up to date physical exam you must do so immediately. Your child will not be able to attend our program until we have these records on file. Thanks.

Again, please encourage your child to leave all toys at home. We have plenty of toys at school for them to play with.

For all full day children, remember to include a spoon, fork and drink in your child’s lunch box. Thanks.

We are asking each family to donate a treat for our Halloween party. Bags of individual snack size pretzels, goldfish, etc, work great. All treats be it candy, chips, etc must be individually wrapped. Keep in mind that we are trying to keep the treats somewhat healthy but it is Halloween so a few pieces of candy are somewhat expected. Please bring this in as soon as possible. Each child will go home with a treat bag so you will be able to decide what your child can and cannot eat.

Keep in mind that we do have outdoor play so please dress your child appropriately – jacket, sneakers, jeans, sweat pants. No party shoes or long dresses, they are too dangerous when the children are climbing and running. Also check the clothes in your child’s shoebox – the weather is getting cooler so the clothes may have to be changed and don’t forget underwear and socks. Thanks.

For all full day Friday children only – For quite a few years we have had parents request a “Pizza on Fridays” lunch which has been a big hit with the children and parents alike. We will again be starting this on Friday, October 4th. If you are participating in the “Pizza on Fridays” lunch, please keep in mind that your child should not bring a lunch box to school on Fridays because pizza, a drink and a snack are provided. We are collecting for three months at a time – it is much easier record keeping this way. $45.00, the cost for the first three months is due now and must be paid in cash. If you are not participating just send lunch as usual. Please advise the staff whether or not you are participating so we know how much pizza we will have to order.

Just a few reminders:

Check the calendar to see your child’s class date for Show-n-Tell.
Scholastic Book orders must be returned by date listed on form.
School will be closed on Monday, October 14th in observance of Columbus Day.
Please e-mail me a quick Hi to info@discoveringmenurseryschool.com so I can save your e-mail address to our contact list.
