January Newsletter

Well, we made it through the holidays! We hope every family had a wonderful holiday season and wish the best for you in the New Year. The staff and I would like to thank you for the many gifts and cards we received. Each and every one was special.

January is a busy month at school. This month’s topics include a review of shapes, colors & numbers, the start of our study of the letters of the alphabet, so keep an eye out for special letter days, Martin Luther King, Jr., arctic animals and winter activities. We will do a week of testing and a full review of everything covered to date. We will also incorporate reading readiness and handwriting skills for the kindergarten bound children.

Report cards will be distributed Thursday, January 25th & Friday, January 26th. If you would like a conference pertaining to your child’s progress please make an appointment with your child’s teacher. If we feel a conference is necessary we will indicate so on the report card.

Please label all of your child’s clothing – it helps tremendously. Hats, scarves, mittens, etc. Also try to encourage your child to leave all toys at home because the cubbies here are overflowing with unnecessary stuff that is being brought to school.

If your child is having lunch in school, please make sure you send in a drink, spoons and/or forks if needed. Pizza money for the Friday full day children that participate is now due. The amount due is $44.00 and it covers January, February and March. Please pay this fee in cash because we need to pay the delivery person with cash. Thanks.

As the colder weather approaches we ask that you please keep your child home if he/she has a fever or the flu. A runny nose is okay but not when it indicates an infection. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. We know that this is not always convenient as most parents work but sick children belong at home resting and we also need to consider the wellbeing of all the children and staff at Discovering Me.

As we are in the winter season we do our best to get outside with the children but if it is too cold or it snows we will not be going out.

Please make note that in the event of snow the school will be closed if there is 3 inches or more on the ground. In the event of snow please check Local News 12 on Cablevision and your e-mail to see if we will be closed or have a delayed opening.

Please note, as discussed at our Parent Meeting in September we will be conducting two Shelter In Place Drills during the year. The first drill will be done on Friday, January 5th from 10:30–11:00am. Please keep in mind that during this drill no one is permitted to enter or leave the building for the duration of the drill. If you had any plans of picking up your child during this time, please be sure to pick them up before 11:00am, if not you will have to wait until the conclusion of the drill which will be at 11:00am. A reminder e-mail will be sent to all families on Thursday, January 4th. Thank you for your understanding of this matter.

Please keep in mind that all medicals and/or physicals must be kept complete and up to date. We send reminders home when your child’s medical is due to expire – please return these as soon as possible. Your child will not be able to attend school without an up to date medical and physical on file.

When you drop off or pick up your child please do not block the driveway or the turnaround in front of 2053 Palmer Avenue. Both must be kept clear at all times in order for traffic to move freely in and out of the driveway. Thanks for your help with this matter.

If you are planning on your child attending summer camp and/or returning in the fall and have not registered as of yet, please do so. Space is limited and registering early is the only way to ensure the days and hours you want.

Congratulations to the Manice Family for winning the 50/50 raffle. Thank you to all the families that participated. Your efforts will allow us to continue to provide extra fun filled days like dance class, magicians, Family Fun Day and other special activities throughout the year.

Just a few reminders:
- School will be closed on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Check your child’s class calendar for special days such as Pajama Day, Show & Tell and so on because the dates vary from class to class.

As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to call us any time.

Sincerely,
Carol, Laurie and Staff
